FP fans, meet Joe Molinari, a therapist in Minneapolis, MN!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
It’s a mid-century modern living room.
It’s in an old mansion in a nice neighborhood where clients can come in, make coffee or tea, and spend time to relax in the space if they chose to.
Clients often say how they appreciate how homelike it is and how it feels like a completely different zone from their busy lives.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
It’s inviting, warm, and bold. I want the vibe to elicit a settling in of the nervous system and the comfort for my clients to be who they are.
This is the space for my clients to feel held enough to take the risk of vulnerability.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
Madoc, the therapy dog is truly the best comfort in the room. So many of my clients start the session by kneeling beside him for belly rubs. Duel resourcing!
I also have a blanket, a ton of fidgets (magnetic balls, putty, a heavy stone), and visual resources like plants and art that has therapeutic meaning.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
The creation of this space came with my jump into solo private practice.
I ran all my ideas by Vickie Shea with Roomscapes Interior Designs. She was so wonderful at bringing my ideas to life and assuring me that I was on the right track!
She also pushed the bold color choice which I can’t be more pleased with.
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
If you can swing it, getting high quality furniture matters when your considering long term comfort and aesthetic and it doesn’t have to be new!
Keep checking Craigslist for the brand or specific piece of furniture you want. So often, something lightly used is 50% off the original cost (or more).
