FP fans, meet Courtney DeCarlo & Heather Johnson, therapists in Oswego, IL!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
Oswego Wellness, Inc. occupies what was once the original Post Office in Oswego, IL. Built in 1874, the space gradually expanded over the years to house a variety of businesses.
We purchased the building in 2017 with a vision of converting it into 6 suites and a waiting room/group room. The renovation project took 8 months, but it was worth the wait!
Our space is an eclectic mix of old and new—the overall design theme is “modern farmhouse”. Many of our furniture pieces are vintage from a local store in town (Hudson Design House), but we have many new pieces as well.
We were able to obtain a photo of the original building from the Little White School Museum, and it is framed in our waiting room to honor our building’s history.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
We hope that our clients feel invited into our practice in every way.
Our waiting room has comfortable seating, toys and books for children, coffee/beverage bar, and good music playing in the background.
We shy from sterile—we want our practice to feel like home. We wanted the space to be calm, warm, welcoming, and sometimes a bit quirky.
Our practice currently employs many different clinicians with many different specializations and various aged clients.
We wanted the space to be pretty, but not precious—a place where we can continue to do good work with good people.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
At Oswego Wellness, we cater to clients across the lifespan.
We have a custom-made beverage bar in the waiting room, an entire craft closet devoted to art therapies for children, and all of our offices have comforts like pillows and blankets.
Our offices were intentionally built with soundproofing insulation, but we also use white noise machines for increased privacy.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
The renovation design was beautifully created by Mila Reyngold, President of Construction Line Architect/G.C. This design was no small feat, as we started with what can only be described initially as a “Frankenstein” building (many different suites with different previous uses).
Courtney DeCarlo, LCPC and co-owner of Oswego Wellness created the interior design and modern farmhouse décor.
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
Don’t be afraid to have fun with your space! It doesn’t need to be generic or sterile—the style can reflect your personality (even down to the music in the waiting room).
Small details like pillows or rugs or antique wall art can create a homey feel. Green accents and plants can make a space feel fresh.
