1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
My office has been described as warm, comfortable and peaceful. People generally comment how “at home” they feel being here.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
The office definitely has a modern vibe but also eclectic. It has comfortable couches, good pillows, and nice art work covers the walls.
I wanted a space that helps clients want more for themselves, not just relationally but also to look at how they are living. How can they get rid of “things” material or emotional that no longer serve them.
The most important message to convey would be: this is a safe place to unpack your life, a space that is peaceful and therapeutic.
The environment you are creating for your client says a lot about how invested you are in them and the therapeutic process.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
In order to have clients feel relaxed and welcome, we have lots of plants and fresh flowers decorating our space.
We also have a water cooler for clients to have filtered water and hot tea. We have white noise machines in every room and try to play good music for our clients.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
I designed the office decor but my husband hung all of the artwork and helped me move every piece of the furniture.
I feel like I am blending two of my loves, design and good treatment. The upkeep of the the decor is something that I’m always fine tuning and making sure it’s working for my clinicians as well as my clients.
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
Think about the client experience. Look at your office with fresh eyes. Is it a space you enjoy being in it? How well does the office create an environment for healing and comfort?
Updating your office doesn’t have to be expensive. Buy off of Craigslist or re-purpose things from your house that can use a new life.
Rugs and lighting are key. And make sure you, as the therapist, have a very comfortable chair!
