Eclectic & Vibrant Cityscape in Brazil

FP fans, meet Dra. Stephanie Smith, a therapist in Sao Paulo, Brazil!

1. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?

I wanted a relaxing space that made people feel at home and according to my teenage clients I have achieved that. “It looks like my lounge or my living room”.

2. WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?

A relaxing, safe and secure environment, one that makes them feel like they are able to share without judgement.

I find smell is one of the best ways of delivering this unique experience, so I have a lovely mix of Raspberry and a Brazilian fruit called “Pitanga” to make a welcoming smell.

3. DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?

I have the usual snacks, Nespresso coffee machine, tea and drinks. I prepare a drink for each person as they arrive, it can be from their favorite Gatorade flavoured drink to their favorite coffee. Water is readily available.

4. WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?

I designed and decorated the space myself, using mainly things from my home in order to fit into a tight budget, splashing out on cushions.

The knick knacks and some plants were gifts from my clients, each one bringing their unique contribution to my office space.  For example: I have a small bonsai from one, a back cushion made by another, a pen holder made by another, a very useful door stopper made by a client, a lovely orchid feature made by another and also a lovely succulent plant in a jar by another.

Each one made these items and they gifted at the end of treatment, I look at those and appreciate how far each individual has come on their journey.

5. ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?

Look for your individual stamp, make this a space that you feel comfortable in, one that you can learn to be vulnerable in your own therapist’s chair as well as be the best therapist you can be with your clients.
