FP fans, meet Deborah Duley, a therapist in Leonardtown, MD!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
I always describe my therapy office as wanting it to feel like someone’s ‘home’ – that everyone who enters feel comfortable, warm, invited and safe.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
I’m super aware of people’s energy and vibes so my biggest hope is that my office reflects its own energy of positivity, hope, warmth and compassion. I want clients to feel at home as soon as they come through the door.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
I am a big believer in fluffing up my nests (hehe) so in all of my offices there are soft, fluffy blankets and a couple of stuffed animals.
Each office door has their own sound machine and there is another one in the waiting area as well. We provide coffee and tea along with cold water bottles and each office has lots of candy which is a huge hit.
The best part is I personally bring my 3 year old corgi Bailee who is our office mascot (unofficially) and all my clients love her and I love having her with me all day as well.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
I decorated my office space by myself. I’ve always loved decorating and it’s a passion of mine to shop for the cutest and most perfect pieces from yard sales, etc.
I pride myself on re-purposing items so 80% of the pieces in my office are previously used. I just re-homed them and it all works great together!
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
I think the biggest thing I would say to both those who are starting out and those who are redesigning, is to figure out what you want your office to say.
How do you want your ideal clients to feel and start from there?
What are your favorite colors? What helps YOU feel at home in your office as well? These are great places to start because we will be spending the most time there so it’s also important that we love our space too.
My husband was against me painting my office pink (my fav color) but I knew it would be perfect and guess what? It is!
I would also say don’t be afraid of color! Don’t be afraid of having too many things on the walls (all my client’s compliment me on my numerous sayings all over the office); don’t try to match everything perfectly, it’s okay to mix colors and textures and wood stains. I do this all the time and I feel it looks great.
So trust your gut and don’t be afraid to get suggestions too from someone who’s office you admire, if you’re stuck.
