FP fans, meet Ernesto Segismundo, a therapist in Fullerton & Huntington Beach, CA!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
I would describe our office suites as home-like yet professional. Our offices are intended to feel warm and welcoming for our clients. We provide a comfortable, professional, and safe space.
We want every individual who walks through our doors to feel as if they are “at home” and can feel completely accepted for who they are.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
The inspiration for my office suites came from the energy I get from my family. My family is pivotal and essential in my career, and to me personally.
My mom passed away suddenly around my birthday in April 2014. It was devastating. My mom’s passing was very difficult for all of us. It impacted both the immediate family as well as my extended family.
But her passing reminded all of us about the importance of supporting each other. My culture values togetherness. I come from a very big Filipino family. I have extended cousins from all over the world and we are all relatively close. We are a collectivist culture.
My office suites reflect the values that are in grained in me. In each office, you will see a living-room style set up. From the waiting room, to the therapy offices, your eyes will gravitate to the couches and accents you would find in a home.
Our clinicians believe that physical space is connected to emotional space and we want our clients to feel a sense of comfort in this environment. I wanted all my clinicians to understand the value of family and I wanted the offices to reflect that value.
Some individuals who come and see us may have a negative perception or experience of family, but at CAV Family Therapy Inc. we try to give them an alternative view of the family system and their emotional well-being. We believe that the therapeutic process can foster emotional, relational, mental, and spiritual growth. Our offices are intended to be the space for this healing process.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
I love 80s music! So when you come to our offices, your ears will be graced by the sound of the 80’s!
Billy Idol, Cindy Lauper, Bon Jovi, Journey, Eagles, Culture Club, Wham, Reo Speedwagon, Prince, Chicago, Whitney Houston and all the one-hit-wonders will serenade you while you wait for your therapist.
We also provide soothing comforts that include sound machines, chocolate, coffee, blankets, and soft lighting.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
My pre-licensed clinicians Adam Luke and Judy Yen decorated the office at Fullerton. They did an amazing job on it!
And my therapists Dr. Robert Pate, and Georgea Madeira, LMFT help me design the Huntington Beach office.
I value my clinicians and encouraged them to decorate their office space in a way that reflected their true self and how they wanted their clients to feel when entering that space with them.
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
My suggestion for therapists who are at the initial stages of designing their office is don’t be too concerned with designing your office around objects, color pallets, patterns, etc.
Instead find inspiration from the good that is within you—the beautiful experience you’ve had with family and friends. By doing that, you set the tone and energy for your office and your practice.
Remember, it’s not all about aesthetics, having a therapeutic environment MUST have meaning and purpose.
