FP fans, meet Jennifer Tichenor & Amanda Vaske, therapists in Maplewood, MN!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
The style that probably best describe the space is “Zen.” Everything in the space was carefully chosen by us.
It was not unusual for us to spend days or weeks discussing a rug, a chandelier, a piece of art or a quote to add to a wall to create the Zen environment that we wanted the offices to feel like.
Our clients have described the space as peaceful, beautiful and sacred. Colleagues have been pretty shocked that we renovated the entire building ourselves and have given feedback that we have created something very special. It looks nothing like it did when we closed on the office.
We’ve had quite a few people say we should go into business as decorators. Lol…..maybe one day. We’re still recuperating from this renovation!
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
We wanted the vibe to be peaceful with a lot of beautiful and inspiring art that you don’t find in most stores. The Maplewood Wellness Center of Minnesota was created with the whole person in mind which for us meant being intentional with all of the decor to symbolize mind-body-spirit.
We knew that we wanted the space to be unique and a style reflecting our mission and what our clients would really like and feel like they were truly entering an oasis. It was important for us to look at it from a clients perspective so we designed it to make people feel welcome and special.
We carefully selected quotes that we had made into decals to be placed on specific walls to create the atmosphere in that room. The office has very peaceful and soft energy without being over the top or pretentious.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
On the first floor we have a very large wall fountain with blue lights and the option of two different waiting areas for clients. We started to call the room with the wall fountain “The Zen Room.”
All of the lights in our office have crystals of some sort, because with the paint colors we chose, the crystals reflect amazing shadows on the walls that are very calming. One of the first things people ask us about and comment on is if we did something unique with the paint to create the shadows.
We have a sand tray table for people to use while waiting for their appointments and offer the usual beverages of water, tea and coffee, have sounds machines, fidgets, soothing and smooth rocks and kinetic sand.
We also have different styles of diffusers in all the offices, with calming essential oil scents that are subtle. In a few of the offices we have water features, such as a wall fountain and a table that was designed to have water loop around the side of it.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
We purchased the building in August of 2016, but had spent a few months before the closing discussing paint colors. We knew that we wanted it to be special and that it was going to take up most of our lives for a few months for that to happen.
The day we closed we started work on renovating the second floor (we still had a tenant on the first floor that wanted to stay until the end of the year). On January 2, 2017, we got to work on the first floor.
We designed the entire office ourselves from top to bottom. The only things we hired out was replacing the floor on the first floor and got help from family with adding a wall for the first floor kitchenette and hanging the lights, patching up dry wall holes.
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
Take the time to select what feels good to you. Make is a space that you really like to be in, but also one that clients look forward to coming to.
The amount of work that it took to complete the office was immense, so make sure you know what your in for. It was all worth it in the end and the best bonding experience for both of us as friends and business partners.
