FP fans, meet Karen Greenberg, a therapist in Evanston, IL!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
My office is modern, almost minimalist, bright, calm, and fun.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
I want to offer my clients a space that feels modern, comfortable, and with a little humor. I use laughter as much as I can with my clients. You have to balance the struggles in therapy with laughter.
I love the little tongue-in-cheek nod to psychology of years past with the framed ink blots.
The throw pillows on the sofa are tree rings, but they also look like fingerprints to me, both symbols of unique identities, just like all my clients are unique and interesting.
Having plants is important to me. I appreciate the metaphor of plants being like people and relationships: they require lots of nurturing, growth can be slow, but when they flourish, they are beautiful.
I hope that my clients feel comfortable. I get a little tickled when my clients take off their shoes and sit cross-legged on the sofa, which they are more than welcome to do.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
My suite-mates and I offer tea and water and clients are welcome to bring anything they’d like.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
I designed my office with help from my husband. We both love the website Apartment Therapy and took a lot of inspiration from their articles.
I Ikea “hacked” my office sofa by replacing the standard legs with custom ones. I found a similar idea for the ink blots on Etsy, and created my own by simply printing images on photo paper and framing them.
I tried to stick to a budget and repurposed several pieces of furniture from my home for my office. When it was all done, I believe “less is more,” and I took furniture out of my office (I had a coffee table and decorative bowl).”
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
Your office is a reflection of you, so feel free to share that with your clients. Don’t be afraid to be bold. Our clients share so much with us, and it’s ok for us to share some of our personality with them via our office.
