FP fans, meet Chesie Roberts, a therapist in Mountain Brook, AL!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
I would describe my offices as southern elegant with a modern flare. I love blue so I designed the offices around varies shades of blue.
My clients always comment on the blue accent wall color. It’s a very clean color that feels cheerful but also calming.
My female clients with their deep southern Alabama accents will often exclaim “It feels so fancy in here!”
I wanted my office to reflect my feminine personality but I wanted to be careful that it didn’t look overly girly.
I incorporated a mix of metals, woods, leather, and iron to help lend balance to the feminine white and blue theme.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
I specialize in Substance Abuse Counseling specifically heroin intravenous use with over ten years’ experience working in sterile treatment centers.
My clients in the past were often low socio income and felt like they were treated as second-class addicts.
I wanted to change that so it was important for me to provide a luxurious setting that allows the client to really feel like a VIP. I wanted to provide an upscale feeling to counseling and break away from the stereotypical counseling office.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
I have been collecting hour glasses for a long time. I have all sorts of different ones displayed throughout my offices including water hour glasses and a collection of blue sand hour glasses.
A solid silver fidget spinner which has heavy bearings gets a lot of use and is always a hit with my anxious clients. It can spin for 3 minutes with one flick of the finger.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
My mother gets most of the credit. If I started picking furniture that she thought was too girly she had no problem letting me know!
We have the same taste so it was easy to trust her to buy something for the office without me seeing it first. She’s a talented local artist and has great ability to balance colors with materials.
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
I would suggest picking a color or painting that really resonates with you and work off that. It took me a year to finally complete my offices.
Take your time. It will feel more genuine. Try not rush with a “Rooms to Go” mindset.
