FP fans, meet Angela Tsiatsos Phillips, a therapist in Lakewood, CO!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
I’d say “Contemporary Zen.” The office is peaceful and warm with simple, clean lines, calming yet vivid color schemes, tasteful art, and comfortable furnishings.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
Calm and secure—an environment of peace and containment, where their deepest hurts will be held with compassion, mindfulness, and gentle care.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
I have hot/cold water, tea, coffee, nuts for snacks as well as mints. I also have a “smart TV” dedicated to providing comforting music and an occasional Ted Talk.
There are numerous fascinating books and magazines in my waiting and treatment rooms, blankets and pillows for comfort, and soft lighting to help soothe anxiety. There is also artwork by a local artist that reflects personal journey work, that is shared to support an environment of openness and care.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
I designed my space. The artist whose work hangs on my walls, Justicia, was very helpful in reflecting what she saw and felt, as well as a few other friends.
And also my children—I wanted to make sure they loved it and felt comfortable knowing where I’d be spending so much of my time.
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
Create a space that calms your own heart.
My belief is that the clients that find us and that find their therapeutic home with us, whether for a short time or long-term, are the ones who will feel some resonance with our personal character and presence; and so the things that help our own hearts are often the same things that help others’ hearts feel at peace.
