FP fans, meet Deborah Moyer, a therapist in San Diego, CA!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
I call it ‘subtle beach theme.’ There’s a photo I took in Maui over the couch, but otherwise the blues and browns are meant to be understated reminders of the beach.
The building is modern, with a big sculpture (The Astronomer) at the entrance, so I wanted my office to feel like it fit in with the look.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
I want people to feel as comfortable as if they were in my home.
It’s hard work that we do in therapy, so I try to provide an environment that’s relaxed and safe.
The big windows let in lots of natural light and offer nice views. I also make a point to keep my office very neat to add to the serene feeling.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
I’ve got a Keurig for coffee, tea and hot chocolate. I also offer water, but by far the most popular items are the Jolly Ranchers (the red ones to be exact).
I make sure there’s always a live orchid on the side table, as well as other plants.
I also make sure there’s a clock positioned so that my clients can see it, so they can decide what they want to bring up and when.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
I really enjoy design, so I mostly did it myself. I found the side chairs (which I absolutely love) at Home Goods and I picked pieces to build the rest of the room from there.
It was mostly done in one marathon shopping weekend. I set up my waiting room right there in the Home Goods store!
My office is very small, just under 300 sq ft including the waiting room, so I made sure that all the furniture was on a smaller scale – a loveseat rather than a couch, a very narrow bookcase, and furniture with legs.
As an office-warming gift, an artist friend surprised me with a painting for my waiting room!
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
You’ll be in the space more than anyone, so create an office you really love going to.
People tend to make a judgment about how successful you are by how nice your office is, so don’t be cheap!
But also don’t buy anything so expensive that you’ll be upset if someone accidentally damages it.
