Funky Glam in Pennsylvania

FP fans, meet Katie May, a therapist in the Philadelphia area of PA!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?

They style of my therapy center is “funky glam.” I wanted to create a space that was reflective of my unique personality and way of working with clients, as well as spoke to their creativity and uniqueness.

My practice, Creative Healing, is a teen support center with a vision for being a safe space for teens to come home and feel non-judgmentally supported for exactly who they are. I really wanted to create a space that aligned with that vision and that didn’t feel like a clinical setting.

2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?

I want my teen clients to feel comfortable and understood. Lots of fluffy pillows, fur blankets and sweet treats do the trick!

I have lots of spaces for comfort and that allow clients to connect with the space in a way that makes them feel like they can really be themselves and open up in a way they may not have been able to before.

3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?

I’m all about the creature comforts! I have a coffee bar with a Keurig and hot chocolate, tea and coffee as well as honey stir spoons, waters, and always candy!

Since I run lots of teen groups, I also do birthday celebrations and clients get a cake with a personalized message. I want my clients to know how important they are to the group (and to me!)

Also, I have a pillow lounge and giant body pillows so teens can spread out with a pillow and blanket and make themselves comfortable in a space that was created just for them.

4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?

I designed it all by myself!

At first, I put pressure on myself to make the offices suite look the way that therapy offices are “supposed” to look and it felt impossible to decorate, but once I gave myself permission to allow the space to reflect my unique vision, it was easy!

5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?

If I were giving other therapists advice on how to decorate their space, I would say, listen to yourself and what energizes you then go from there.

When you can allow your authenticity to shine through in your space, it will help you attract your ideal clients that were meant just for you too!
