Bright & Traditional in New York

FP fans, meet Dana Carretta, a therapist in Hartsdale, NY!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?

The style of my office is traditional, warm and inviting. I wanted to create an atmosphere where individuals felt at home, a place where they can be comfortable and be themselves.

2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?

I hope that my office portrays a vibe that encourages acceptance and promotes healing. My goal is to have my clients relax on the couch, feel completely comfortable with being themselves and not fear any judgment. By removing any negative energy, we create the space for healing to take place.

I realize it’s hard to open up to a complete stranger when first entering a therapeutic relationship, so my hope is that the space in which the therapy takes place helps to ease any concerns or discomforts.

3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?

Absolutely! I come from a very Italian family, so it’s in my nature to want to make someone a cup of coffee and a 4-course meal as soon as they walk in the door.

Since I can’t go that far, I always try to make my clients as comfortable as possible by having snacks, coffee and tea readily available. I also have blankets and candles to create a relaxing atmosphere.

Since I was trained in animal assisted therapy, I also sometimes I bring Charlie, a yorkie-bichon pup, into the office as well. He’s always well received and loved by my clients, and I’ve noticed that he helps ease any fears of new patients when first entering a therapy session.

4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?

I’m proud to say that my office was designed completely by myself. In addition to creating a warm environment, I always wanted my office to be a place that I enjoyed being in. Especially since I spend a good amount of my time here, I might as well enjoy it!

For me personally, different shades of blue are very soothing, which is why I tried to incorporate shades of blues and greens into the space. I’m always adding to the space as well, getting new furniture accents here and there, or moving things around.

Similar to how one takes pride in their home, I take pride in my office and will always take an opportunity to enhance the positive vibes in it whenever possible.

5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?

My best advice would be to create a space that YOU love.

I’m a firm believer that energy and positive vibes are contagious. So if you’re happy in a space that you love, that happiness will spread to your clients and help them in their own wellness journey.

If you hate your space, chances are, your clients will pick up on that too, and won’t be encouraged to be there any more than you are. So make it a place that feels like home!
