Rustic & Eclectic in Illinois

FP fans, meet Maureen Werrbach, a therapist in Chicago, IL!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?

I’d say my practice is expressed in an eclectic rustic modern way. The offices are put together with a variety of wooden modern looking pieces.

You’ll find that each office has handmade furniture, from coffee tables to side tables, shelves to bookcases, made with love from my mom. It really gives off a comfortable vibe.

2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?

When clients come to my practice, I want them to feel like they are walking into a living room. Each office has a living room feel to it, with drapes, calm colored walls, lamps, plush couches and chairs, coffee and side tables, and fun wall décor.

The living room represents a place for conversation and connection, so I wanted to bring that into the office.

3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?

Each office has fidgets on the table for clients to use (and many of them do!). The waiting room has a coffee station that has water, coffee, teas, and hot chocolate and a bowl of mints.

4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?

My mom and I both love to decorate. She helped me design and decorate both of my locations as well as build numerous pieces of furniture, including coffee tables, side tables, shelves, book shelves, wooden wall art, and both office coffee stations.

5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?

Decoration is key. Even if the building is old, or the location is not ideal, make your space warm, comforting, clean, and eye catching. Not a day goes by that a new client comes into one of my offices and comments on how it looks.

Many clients will come early to sit in the waiting room and read before a session, and parents will stay in the waiting room while their child is in the room and do work, sitting on the chairs, while Tracy Chapman music plays in the background.
