FP fans, meet Dr. Julie Jones, a therapist in Middletown, CT!
1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR THERAPY OFFICE?
I would describe our offices as warm, comfortable, soothing and serene. Our clients often tell us they feel like they are on a beautiful beach all to themselves.
Aesthetics are very important to our practice. We strive to help our clients feel welcome and at ease from the moment they walk in the door.
2) WHAT VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR OFFICE GIVES YOUR THERAPY CLIENTS?
I strive to help our clients and visitors feel safe and relaxed when they enter our space. A space that embodies a well-planned and thoughtful setup, arrangement and upkeep is vital to our practice.
I paid special attention to choosing a color scheme that felt “beachy” with blue, beige, gray and lavender tones running throughout the office suite.
I also opted for soft/natural lighting, lots of plush pillows, soft, shag area rugs and several floral/landscape prints and décor.
One of my favorite pieces is a large glass candle holder that I filled with carefully chosen rocks from our family vacation on Block Island last summer.
3) DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATURE COMFORTS IN YOUR OFFICE FOR CLIENTS?
Yes, we do! Our clients are treated with a hostess buffet that includes coffee, fine teas, cold water, and chocolates/candies. I also offer hot chocolate in the colder months.
Each therapy room includes throw blankets for comfort. Our sound machines are particularly soothing and we often have parents who fall asleep in the reception area while waiting for their children!
We consider it a privilege and an honor to be allowed into our client’s lives. Therapy is often hard work for our clients. We respect their need for safety and comfort as they touch the most painful parts of themselves. We are committed to taking excellent care of our clients.
4) WHO DESIGNED AND DECORATED YOUR THERAPY OFFICE? DID YOU GET HELP FROM PROFESSIONALS, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS, OR FAMILY?
I decided to cut costs and did everything myself (except the painting!). It was such a joy to design and decorate.
I frequented Home Goods and Pier One. I also did much of it online with WayFair and Overstock.
I started with a color scheme and took this palette wherever I went just in case I might see something that would fit. I loved using Etsy to create some unique, handmade signs and wall hangings.
I will be expanding our group practice into another office suite this year and I’m excited to begin this renovation project!
5) ANY ADVICE FOR THERAPISTS WHO ARE JUST STARTING OUT AND DESIGNING THEIR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, OR SEASONED THERAPISTS LOOKING TO REDESIGN THEIR OFFICES?
Yes! I would first recommend taking the time to browse through magazines, Pinterest and other counseling office websites for new and fresh ideas.
I spent a lot of time just thinking about what made me feel soothed and comfortable. I drew out furniture arrangements and researched color schemes.
What kind of energy did I want my space to exude? How can I make even the most anxious client feel comfortable and safe?
You don’t have to spend tons of money to make your space special and don’t be afraid to unleash your own creativity.
Most of all…love your space and make it a reflection of you.
